WINE?!!

Hello everyone~
I'm on the food & beverages committee and want to propose an idea...
WHAT IF WE CUT OUT THE WINE?
I know, I know, thats the most exciting part :)
BUT heres the problem:
Because City Hall has such tight rules and restrictions, even if we were able to get our entire beverage selection donated, the service fee would still be over $2,000. The cheapest beverage caterer I spoke to said that the service alone (this is NOT including drinks) is somewhere around $2,500 because of all the external costs (travel time, set up, break down, clean up, bartenders, etc.).
We will still be serving amazing food! I just feel that the wine might be too excessive, especially with our $2,200 deficit as it is. ALSO, the $500 we would be saving from the wine, we could put towards our debt.

What does everything think? Feedback please!

Paige

  1. I think it would kinda suck to have to cut the wine, but we will have to do what we have to do. Lowering our debt would be nice.

  2. I don't think our show will suffer without wine so im ok with it...

  3. it would be unfortunate to cut the wine, but that would cut our deficit and possibly mean no more money out of our pockets which would be nice. People aren't coming for the wine and the food, they are coming to see us so no biggie!

  4. Paige,

What if we have student volunteers do all the setting up/break down so the server only serves and only travels.. Is this okay with city hall?

Since this is a professional event I think wine is important. Of course the show is for us and our work, but it's a celebration and wine is almost expected..

BUT.. If ir doesn't work out, oh well. Let's talk to city hall and the caterers one more time.

  5. I agree with Jenny that it's expected. There has always been wine and it's part of the overall atmosphere that gives it more status over other showings... but we have to do what we have to do. I just think maybe cutting something else would be more beneficial than cutting the beverages.

  6. Not all beverages will be cut though. I think cutting the wine would save a lot of money that we could put toward something else. Wine does give a more classier feel, but our work is what is important, so it is alright with me. The caterer don't care about anyone setting up and taking down, they will still charge a flat rate of $2,000, there wasn't really any other way around it. So help or no help the wine catering is expensive.

  7. I think that our show would suffer without the wine, it is part of the tradition and experience. I have attended senior shows from other design schools and programs and wine is always expected and present.
Barry Swenson had previously offered to donate wine, I know a ton of bartenders who would work for little to no cost (in fact one of our close alums is a licensed bartender) and we have student volunteers who can set up and break down and possibly even serve.
I personally served wine and sangria at the senior show last year and I know it was a big part of the show that I think many of our visitors would miss.

  8. Hannah..

Paige knows of places that will donate wine..

The issue is with City Hall. City Hall will not allow to serve wine unless we have a licensed bartender from their approved list. On that list, I believe there are only 3 different beverage caterers. Paige has talked to them, and even with them working with us, we are still looking at about $3000. So because of City Hall, we cannot just choose any bartender..

  9. I this that jumping right to cutting wine out is not the best way to look at this. Maybe we should try to focus on getting some more donations in order to pay for the wine because I do think that it is an expected part of a professional based show. I just think that jumping right into writing it off isn’t the right answer
